Fall Quarter Update

November 2024 Newsletter

Quick Summary

  • A quick summary of AMAT's fall quarter progress

Hello everyone,

It’s been a busy few months for our team, filled with outreach events and club activities. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to recently:

On September 20th, AMAT participated in the Engineering Club Fair, where we welcomed many new members. We’re excited to share that our club now has over 200 members! Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in AMAT and joined our community. Below is a photo of two of our leads, Charlie and Dean, representing us at the fair.

In late September, we were thrilled to welcome a new advisor to our team: Professor Christina Harvey! Her expertise in aircraft design has been invaluable, and she has played a key role in helping us secure sponsorships and grants. We are excited and grateful to have her guidance and support as part of our team.

A week later, on September 30th, we held our Conceptual Design Review, which was a great success. We sincerely appreciate the alumni and advisors who attended, provided valuable feedback, and supported our efforts.

Since October 7th, we have been hosting weekly general meetings every Monday from 5:10 to 6:00 PM in the ESDC. Our sub-teams—including Aero, Fuselage, Landing Gear, Empennage, and Wing—have made significant progress this quarter, and we are thrilled with their dedication and hard work.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our members, we have developed a brand-new, detailed design for our competition entry aircraft. The design utilizes a pod and boom fuselage complete with a high mounted tapered wing to house a pair of water bottle fuel tanks, a tricycle landing gear configuration for ease of landing and a T-tail to maximize stability and control in flight.

Finally, some exciting competition news: our team submitted our design proposal for the Design/Build/Fly competition at the end of October. After a month of anticipation, we learned that our proposal received a top 16 score and placed 53rd overall out of 112 accepted teams!

We are now preparing for our Preliminary Design Review, scheduled to take place on Zoom on December 2nd. If you’re interested in learning more about our aircraft and design process, we invite you to join us for the presentation!

Thank you to all our members, alumni, and advisors for your hard work, support, and dedication. Wishing everyone happy holidays and safe travels!
